Twelve years ago my hair began to thin at the crown. I

consulted with several dermatology professionals and

ultimately determined my hair loss was likely to be permanent.

This was devastating and emotionally challenging. I struggled

with various ways to compensate - experimenting with wigs,

wraps over two years and eventually decided to shave and

“rock the block”.

 Why Hats?

An idea began to stir; I have always admired hats and enjoyed

wearing them. Other women wear hats! I like style...other

women I know embrace style... Perhaps I can make a hat or two

that other women with alopecia like me, or medical conditions

that cause hair loss would wear. Hats would also cover with my

sensitive, and at times, cold head.

My sewing skills were limited to straight lines: curtains, aprons,

hems, but, I could read and use the internet, a little. I was off! I

discovered a milliner in Seattle, my new home city, who listened

to my ideas and agreed to teach me in the art of millinery.

These are a few creations I would like to share with you. The work

of steaming blocking, trimming and detailing each piece is both

challenging and exciting. I hope there is something that sparks an

idea for you or for a friend.

Ideally, I want to tailor a hat to an individual’s particular style and

taste; color is important - style and shape are important - how one

wears a hat is important. Each person is unique and so is each hat,

so conversations, clarity and carriage ! Let’s have some fun!
